The American social psychologist George Herbert Mead divides the " self" into the " I" and the " Me". This view helps us understand the meaning of " self" in the narrative of literary memory. From the perspective of the " Me", the "self" recalled in " literature as testimony" is a symbol of social collective representation. The " self" recalled in Confessions is not only the " I", that is, a unique literary model, but also the " Me", that is, a social person infused with the spirit of the times. James and Bergson's theory of self-consciousness can be used to explain two different styles of stream-of-consciousness literature. The " self" recollection in literature refers to both the individual recollection of the narrative subject itself and the collective recollection of the group to which one belongs. |
