| Matthew Arnold, a British poet and critic in the 19th century, has a significant influence on Liang Shiqiu. The idea of human nature is the core of Liang Shiqiu's thought of art. His concept of glory of human nature comes from Arnold's cultural concept. "Liang classics" can be defined as reason, moral, balance, health and so on, which are the meanings of "sweetness and light" in Arnold's cultural concept. Therefore, it concludes that Liang's idea of human nature inherits Arnold's cultural concept and advocates that literature expresses the moderate human nature with reason of ethnics or the ideal self beyond a class. |
