| Wang Zhijian was an important essay anthologist in late Ming Dynasty and the author of the book Si Liu Fa Hai (An Anthology of Parallel Prose), the only parallel prose anthology of Ming Dynasty listed in Si Ku Quan Shu(Complete Library in the Four Branches of Literature). His work Gu Wen Du Bian (Selected Ancient Prose), a collection of the works of the Eight Great Prose Writers in Tang and Song Dynasties, implies his intention of collecting ancient works as illustration of his own ideas. It is characterized in its deep and detailed academic scrutiny of the literature sources, unique historian insights on "mutual proof between literature and history" and distinctive ways of prose selection and comments. Together with two of his earlier works, Gu Wen Ou Bian(A Collection Ancient Prose) and Gu Wen Lan Bian(A Second Selection of Ancient Prose), the book forms an anthology series which shows panoramic -view and insightful understanding of the evolution of ancient Chinese prose. |
