| Story about the struggle against Kuomingtang is a genre of novel popular in late 1950s and early 1960s. The novels enjoy their popularity then for different reasons. Red Rock is for its narrative of power struggle, human dignity and revelation of cruel torture; Keep the Red Flag Flying and Sow Fire Down for its telling of hatred, class antagonism, emotional struggle and love story, Tracks in the Snowy Forrest for its romantic legend, Song of Youth for its meditation on the position of individual in revolution, and Winter Jasmine for its presentation of the virtues of working people. In summary, those anti-Kuomingtang novels in the "Seventeen Years" are popular mainly for their elements of class struggle, hatred, severe living situations, tough individual wills, legend and love stories as well as individual liberation. |
