| 尽管严复的翻译对于欧洲科学向中国的传播做出了极为重要的贡献，但是仔细观察严复的翻译，发现严复作为欧洲科学思想的传播者的评价可能在严格意义上是过于高估的，这是因为严复在译介过程中所关心的可能不是科学本身。我们可以从几个方面来观察这一结论，首先，严复注意到了中文的含混性问题，这一问题的发现具有极其重要的现代意义；其次，严复也发现了在翻译过程当中比喻的妙处，他甚至在翻译《群己权界论》时嵌入最具独创性的例子，尽管这一例子从来没有出现在穆勒的书中；再次，严复在翻译过程当中存在着文本任意改编的问题，同时甚至很难在翻译过程当中遵循翻译名称的一致性原则；最后，在新词的创造过程中，恰恰是严复所发明的词汇没有承受住物竞天择的考验。 |

| In spite of his great contributions in introducing European sciences into China, Yan Fu as a communicator of scientific thoughts perhaps has been overvalued, for what he focused in his translation is beyond science itself. Our discussion centers around the questions in several aspects. First, Yan noted the ambiguity of Chinese language, which is extremely important for modern Chinese time; second, Yan noted the wonderful use of metaphor in translation. He even inserted his own original metaphors in Qun Ji Quan Jie Lun, a translation of John Muller's On Liberty; third, he made a number of adaptation and he failed to follow the consistency of translation terms; last, his coinage of new words failed to survive the natural selection of language. |
