| The Mansion is an expression of William Faulkner's restless meditations on the fate of American South. Due to the disappointment of old aristocrats who failed to resist the bourgeoisie's encroachment of the community, the author chooses Mink Snopes, a poor "white trash" to terminate Flem Snopes, the aggressive capitalist, and arranges Mink's death after the revenge. The story tells the author's complicated desires. On the one hand, he wants the lower class to rebel and contain the capitalist group; on the other hand, he is afraid of the occurrence of probable class struggle in American South. |
