| 圣哲为文,温润秀洁,智慧流云,和合畅达。熔精华,求真务实;萃新奇,精神飞动。义真而文婉,独拔而伟丽。金银不足方其珍,珠玉无以喻其贵。义明词净,不欲染杂,碎文琐语,斑驳必乱。为文必简而精深,取事必核以明察。裁章置句,立本体奥,有吞天地之气,可入博雅之巧。凝练世事即文章,雕琢文心存化境;思接千载通万里,体旧维新意无穷。而今时下之论,沉迷于窠臼之中,游淡于生活之外;怡然于杯水微澜,固恋于细小节点;不究实践之则,不循先哲之理;不察兴衰之故,不探成败之因;焉能金针度人,化民成俗,秉承大义,继绝开新? |

| Lessons by ancient sages are always brief, moderate and as intelligent as the swift fluent clouds. They tell the essential truth and fresh spirits. Sincere, natural while eloquent, they are more valuable than gold or jewel. Guided by clear meaning and based on words free from promiscuity, the essays bear on conciseness which means profundity and careful observation. Their exactitude syntax and textures are as natural as the universe while as refined as master intricacies. It is based on deep understanding of the world that masterpiece frames; on meticulous meditation that excellence exists; on pervasive imagination that ideas take shape and on innovative examination significance grows. On the contrary, most essays of today indulge themselves in the needle-points in stead of real-life concerns. They are confined in cup-contained contents and spot-ranged realms, refusing to explore the principles for practice or to follow the aims for which ancient philosophy was created. Nor do they probe into the causes of rise and fall, or reasons for success or defeat. How could such works bear the duties to teach, to civilize, to moralize and to pass down？ |
